Robert will preach Sunday evening at 5:00, Lord willing, at Charleston. Kay Williams funeral service will be this morning at 11:00 at Dickins Funeral Home in Batesville. She had a ready smile and service and only turned 60 last Sunday (the 15th). The daughter of brethren Robert and Dorothy Hendrix, she has 2 daughters and 1 son surviving as well as several grandchildren and her mother. Special singing night at the Calvary Hill church in Oxford on Tuesday evening, 6:00 pm, Hwy 6 East of Oxford. You are invited to enjoy with them the study of songs led by John Hester and Steve DePriest. The HIMS will teach and preach at the Grenada Lake Youth Rally next Saturday (8/28) from 9 am till 1 pm and sing at the close of the program as well. Let me know and I will be glad to pick any youth, etc. up for the trip to Grenada Lake. Lunch is provided for all. 8/1/10......Gospel preaching each night at Coffeeville (8/2-4/10) at 7:30 pm by Ray Paseur. Building located on Bailey Avenue, 2 streets east of the Coffeeville School Building. Enjoy any night only through Wednesday. Gospel preaching by a variety of speakers at Courtland church of Christ begins next week (8/8-15/10) with Davy Russell opening the 10:00 am service on Sunday and Michael Bates at the 7:30 pm special night service. The Monday through Thursday night services are at 7:00 each time. The various speakers are: Mon-Tim Burroughs, Tues-Jerry Martin, Wed-Billy Bland and Thurs-Larry Fife; remember each weeknight is at 7:00. We really had a well attended meeting at Crockett church last week with many making known his intention to 'change' a way of life; regular attendance in the 40s was exceeded by almost 15 at each service save two which were 41 and 42 in attendance. I'm so grateful for the interest and encouraging plans to be with me again at the Looxahoma congregation the first week of October, Lord willing. Sister Evelyn Page placed membership with Crockett; she was able to attend each service in the meeting. I enjoyed visiting the Batesville meeting with Barry Grider on Friday night; wonderful biblical material was presented each night (I heard by way of the batesvillechurchofchrist dot com website) while I was gone and, of course, on Friday night as well. His preaching helped the souls who hear by any means--in person or via the net. Great Vacation Bible School at Elliott, Saturday, July 31st with about 50 in attendance. Our own E J and Zane led the way in teaching the adult class and leading the songs. Great and enjoyable. -0- 6/4/10....The Gospel lectureship at Calvary Hill, Hwy. 6 East of Oxford on the hillside, gets underway with Steve Hent at 7:00 tonight; Tom Holley of Starkville also speaks as well as Cecil May, Jr. scheduled to begin at 8:00. He now lives and teaches in Montgomery ALA; hope s/ Winnie is with him as well. Lectures get underway on Saturday at 9:00 with Joel Ellis of LaGrange, GA and Cecil at 9:40; Robert R Taylor, Jr. at 10:40...he's of Ripley, TN and has written many books which we love 'Christ in the Home' is one; Gary Kerr of Bowling Green, KY closes the morning at 11:20; The afternoon gets underway with Will Anderson at 2:00pm and Joel Ellis at 2:40; Michael Bates at 3:40 and Tom closes at 4:20. Go and enjoy some if not all of the lectures. I am enjoying conversations with Hugh O'Brien (Wyatt Earp); Johnny Western (Gene Autry's singer) and even Clint Walker (Cheyenne and Daniel Boone) and Robert Fuller (Wagon Train); will leave later this morning, but the memories are so good. Last night a panel called 'Mr Gibbs' the sidekick of Wyatt Earp for four years. He was a 'hoot' who really enjoyed telling us of his two show Cadillacs, one being a limited edition of the 1938 model. Many of the closes of the 'Gunfight at the O K Corral were shown last night. It seems no one definitively knows the story of that 20 seconds, 34 short event in October of 1881...... Have a great day....thanks for your service. 6/3/10....Enjoyed a fine crowd of over 100 at the summer series in Alamo, Tn last night; came to Olive Branch overnight to attend a couple of days of viewing the old westerns at the Memphis Film Festival. You can google to go to the Memphis Film Festival and see the various actors who will be here to see and interview....; I heard our good, young preacher friend, Chad Ramsey, did really well in the summer series begun n Batesville last night. This is not unexpected. Worship defined and a great start. .... don't forget that Friday night, 7 pm at Calvary Hill-Oxford Steve Hentz speaks in the gospel lectures and at 8:00 Cevil May , Jr will speak; he now lives in Alabama and teaches there. Robet R Taylor, Jr of Ripley, TN will speak on Satuday morning about 10:00 am and Michael Bates will take his place on Satuday afternoon about 3...... 5.29.10...Special teaching services are planned for early June this year: Calvary Hill church in Oxford features Steve Hentz and Cecil May, Jr. on Friday evening,7:00, June 4 and lectures about every hour starting Saturday morning, June 5th, at 9:00 with preachers like Robert R Taylor, Jr. (of Ripley, ,TN). Jackson's Grove gospel meeting with the young preacher at Forrest-Irene Church of Christ in south Memphis, Matthew Jones, begins Sunday, June 6 with night services at 7:00 through Wedneday, June 9. The Sunday services are at 10:00 and 11:00 with a luncheon together at Noon, but the night service is at 7:00. Enjoy......and grow in the Lord 5.27.10...In case some are desirous of a special series of studies re: Worship on Wednesday night at 7 pm at Batesville the Summer Series begins next week (June 2nd) with Chad Ramsey, of the Gloster St. church in Tupelo, visiting in Batesville. Different speakers each Wednesday night will explore the topic of worship this summer. -0- Attendance at Durant on Monday night was very good; about 10 of the tornado victims of the Ebenezer community were in attendance which included a number of young people. They expressed deep gratitude for the variety of help which came from Batesville and Charleston in the aftermath of the storm a few weeks ago. Steven Ray of Yazoo City spoke on Tuesday and Wednesday nights and Greg Ledbetter, our son-in-law, will close the meeting on Thursday at 7:30 pm. -0- Don't forget the visit of Joel Harper and Margaret Ellen Fox this Sunday morning Re: Mexico Mission Trip. He'll speak at the class time 10:00 am and the sermon at 11:00 as well. Potluck lunch will be followed by the early service (1:15 pm) this 5th Sunday at Charleston. If you wish some very good information about the Mexico work, here is the place to visit on May 30th. -0- I've been asked by the VFW to emcee the events at 11:00 am downtown on Monday, the 31st. This is the seventh time for which I am blessed by the local veterans in leading this brief program. Pray for good weather, please, at least till Noon on Monday..... -0- 3.25.10....Grand beginning for the gospel meetings; we enjoyed 43 Sunday morning with 60 or so in the afternoon. The sermons were well received; clothing from Batesville was delivered along with the moneys sent as well. The meeting on tonight (Mon.) is at 7:30 re: Relationship of Salvation and the Church of our Lord. Thanks for your prayers 5/23/10....Headed to Durant to open the gospel meetings with three sermons on Sunday, 10, 11 and 2:30pm and one sermon on Monday night, 7:30 pm (I know the first bulletins said 7:00, but the actual time planned is 7:30 pm). Thanks for your prayers in our behalf; many of the folks from the tornado ridden Ebenezer community will be present for these sermons. So, thanks for your prayers for us. 5/19/10....Word came from the call of my wonderful Christian friend, Bob McComb of Pontotoc of the passing of one of the most wonderful Christian women that I've known, his wife, Marie McComb. Sister Marie had suffered mightily in the past few years of time and Bob was always at her side with caregiving of the 'top drawer' fashion. Sons, Harold and Eddie, are no doubt stunned at the passing of Mom. Only a few times in life do we meet someone who is a princess among us who encouraged and challenged us to greater heights and service. Such was her skillful voice and choice of words. Holding back many times to not say 'too much' to harm another; yet, taking a stand within herself and always asking gospel preachers their biblical advice to be sure of what the Scriptures say. I have lost a Christian princess to whom I said these words a few years ago. She wouldn't let me finish, but that humility was expected. Visitation at Okolona church of Christ, North Gatlin Street is Thursday about Noon (5/20) with memorial service at 2:00 pm and burial at the Okolona cemetery just north of town. Troy McNutt, Robert Kingsley and I will say a few remarks, none of which will do justice to the heart that ceased on Tuesday morning at 10:15 . Please add our sister in Christ from Charleston to your prayers: 5/15/10....Just received word late this afternoon of the notice of sister Arlene's passing around Noon today; we prayed for her full recovery and although this news saddens us, we are thankful for her life and influence for good and since she couldn't get well from the past week's surgery and therapy, we rejoice in the hope which sustained her life always. I tried to call the home but no answer as of 6 pm today; I am sure Jerry and family are shocked as are we and they are in our prayers now for coping with her passing from our earthly scene. But, the real Arlene continues on in God's world. Men's breakfast is in the morning (Sunday) at 8 a.m. in the annex area..... 5/15/10....Just received word this Saturday morning of the sudden turn for the worse of our sister Arlene Bradshaw in the Greenwood hospital; let's pray for her and Jerry and family; previously this week, she was in good spirits, smiles abundant, good skin color, sitting up on her bed and looking forward to a few more days of therapy and she'd be home with her new knee. Let's hope the problem now encountered was quickly found and addressed so she will have the complete recovery she began......//For any others who are saddened by loved ones illnesses, our prayers continue with them, too. ....My prayers are for Zane and E J as they serve Sunday morning at Charleston. The growth for speaking and teaching a class are ongoing; I spoke to each of them on last Wednesday night, "Do what you can in a prepared way, but, also, allow the Lord to work in the hearts of those you address; you don't have to try and do it by yourself." 5/14/10....Grateful for Bill's obeying the gospel on Thursday of this week. You've met him at services here and we all rejoice he's understood more about obeying the Lord and has started this wholesome journey with us here. Hope the activities for camp on the square are successful in everyway. Thanks for all you who made it possible. Maybe the rains were not in the way of a great event and result. Thanks for the ladies good work as well as the good technology for the graduates last Sunday night; what a celebration........ I can't help but mention the wonderful growth of several brethren as they have worked with us at Charleston: first, E J Bratcher and his teaching of a class---wonderful growth, enjoy his work everytime. Recently, he taught two adult class studies at the ole Ford's Well church out from Oakland on the book of Exodus. Brethen reported excellent studies along with the preaching of Zane Surrette who has worked hard in his songleading that he has become an excellent one plus he has worked up two sermons which are fine. IN FACT, HE WILL be preaching at Charleston on the 16th as rdr begins the meeting at Sardis that morning. Sherry Bratcher, Laura Criss, Vicky Barefoot, Linda Sanders and Donna Prine are wonderful organizers and arrangers of a variety of good-will projects. Their example is with the best of the finest Christian ladies I have known throughout the years who serve so well. Recently, the willingness of Brad Barefoot to speak a little! has come to light and he gave an evanglism report to the Ford's Well church just last Sunday as well as taught a class and led some singing. It's fun to see the growth of Christian brethen anytime. and there are others, too, I'll add them later. Please give these a pat on the back, soon. Thank you..... Word has come from the Beardain family of the upgrading of the condition of Vickie Beardain, wife of Roger and daughter in law of Dan and Linnie Beardain of Winona. It appears that tests reveal that medications may help in a wonderful way. Please, continue to have the family in your prayers as they work through the treatments needed. -0- I regret having failed to place this announcement of a wonderful friend's passing of our community: Ben Barrett Smith, 67, died Sunday, April 18, 2010, at St. Francis Hospital in Memphis, Tennessee.Visitation is 5-7 p.m. today at First United Methodist Church in Batesville. Services are at 11 a.m. Thursday, April 22, 2010, at the church, with burial at 3 p.m. at Oak Hill Cemetery in Water Valley. We were just notified of the passing of Mitchell Arnold's sister, Sue Sneed, in the Memphis area; memorial service will be on Thursday at the Barlett United Methodist Church building. Visitation will begin at 10 am and the funeral service will begin at 11 am. The Bartlett church is located at 5676 Stage Road, Barlett, TN. Once again, sadness has visited the Arnold family. It seems to me that within a year or so 3 or 4 of his family members have passed on. God bless the Arnold family. They are special friends. Their grand daughter, Lauren, will be one of the counselors at camp this summer for Session 4. She is a wonderful young lady. Mrs. Sneed was 82 and had lived in Azalea Gardens in Oxford for 3 years prior to moving to the V.A. Nursing Home in December, 2009, where she passed away on Monday evening (19th). We knew the day would come, but we sorrow at the passing of Johnny Sanders anyway. His passing came amidst a whirlwind of effort to bring him back one more time, even flying him to Oxford, before he crossed over. "He has a new porch" this evening (4/19)". I don't know that I've ever known a man who enjoyed more the rocking chair on a front porch...meeting and greeting others as they drove past. Johnny was a working, Christian man as well. He knew how to help folks quickly and efficiently. He also kept growing to improve in every spiritual way with the Lord. He often asked for prayers as he grew. We'll miss him, but never pass a 'porch' but that we'll think of him. Memorial service is Wednesday afternoon at 3 pm with a visitation time to begin one hour earlier at 2 pm at Womble Funeral Home in Charleston. Just heard last night was the fact that Velda Carter was in a major car accident last week which led to the loss of her car as it was so badly damaged. She is home recuperating. Prayers: Gayle Lester McDonough, of Jonesboro, AR is in serious health condition. She grew up in Clarksdale and is a cousin of Sandra Foster. Her parents are Bill & Etta Lester of Jonesboro. Remember Geneva Baird while in Poland. Matthew Powell, grandson of Scott & Myrtle Lauderdale, is waiting for results of the biopsy he had this week. Our deepest sympathy to two families ~ the Bobo family in the passing of William E. Robertson, uncle of Curtis. Funeral Service is today. ~ the Rinehart family in the passing of Hank’s uncle, Joel Rinehart, who was in his 50’s. Fun Friday - April 23 at noon in the annex. United in Christ NW MS Gospel Meeting at the Batesville Civic Center is May 3-5 at 7:00 M-W, the bus will be taken each evening for our elderly or anyone else who would like to ride. Dear Fellow Christians, Thank you so much for your prayers, cards, visits, and your thoughts during my illness. Garvis Semore now of Freed-Hardeman as well as Bruce Pate, former preacher at Central Academy back in the '70s, now at the Antioch church in Nashville, TN and Larry Harper of Alamo, TN were guest preachers. -0- Mike Clark of Batesville has improved and was to come home today (Friday) as his temp has been kept down. Just received a call from Sandra Foster. Mike was getting ready to come home and was told that he has ecoli so he will have to remain in the hospital; God bless. Later the information will be on the calvaryhillchurchofchrist dot org website under the heading 'Outline Techniques'. -0- Mike Clark of the Batesville congregation was admitted to the Tri-Lakes Hospital in Batesville Friday for observation and later moved to Oxford for a possible surgery. Please add him and Ellen as well as relatives of the Reed families 1. Mother of Danny Tutor, Nellie Mavis Tims Tutor, 80 years old, passed away at her home in Courtland, MS on Monday morning, February 15, 2010. Wells Funeral Home - http://www.wellsfuneralhome.net/index.cfm Our sympathy is extended to Danny, Judy and the Family. 2. Our sympathy is extended to Tommy & Sandra Foster and Family in the death of Tommy's mother, Mrs. Eula Mae Foster, on Tuesday evening - Feb 16th. Visitation will be tonight (17th) at Newson Funeral Home in Charleston. Funeral Services at Newsom will be at 2 pm on Thursday. Burial at Sumner, MS. -0- LATEST ANNOUNCEMENTS ARE AT THE TOP OF THIS SITE PAGE= TOUR OF THE FHU BIBLE LECTURESHIP W/ RDR........ FOLLOW A DAY BY DAY W/RDR CHECK ON THE CHARLESTON PAGE FOR EARLIEST REPORTS........PLEASE......... Feb. 12....Yes, early at the update today! Was loaded for trip back to MS by 5:30 am today; but, till the discussions which begin at 8 am this morning, I will be on campus. Ordered 35 CDs of the speakers, including our own Molly Lipe's lecture to ladies in the Bible School Workshop (2nd Annual) back on Monday, during the week; will pickup before leaving at noon. I've heard of 7 or 8 inches of snow down in the Jackson, MS area and some smaller amounts 1-2 inches coming into north MS this morning;hope it clears off the road before I sky on it!....The emphasis on biblical preaching last night in the lecture was duly needed (I Cor. 14) however, the idea of more 50 minute sermons brought many discussions, especially from some younger preacher students. I discussed with several of them before leaving the auditorium. The passage is not dealing with the amount of time; rather the quality of the preaching. They were concerned about jumping to 45-50 minutes from their usual 15-20 format. If the biblical emphasis is quality of content, understandability, then, the length of sermon doesn't matter as much. ....Back to yesterday and something which struck me on the trip out Hwy. 100 east of Henderson---it's all built up now. Where only a few years ago, there were a few stores; now, houses are everywhere and timber has given way to well-kept pasteur lands. What a surprise!......Well, headed to Loyd Aud for Phil Sanders lesson......hope you have enjoyed the updates from FHU this year........s/rdr Feb. 11....You know something is going on due to the delay (till 7 pm) of an update today; I took occasion to travel to Clarksville, TN for the memorial service of Greg's grandfather, Robert Francis Ledbetter, 98. A tribute was given to a man who has left a legacy for his family and all friends. His favorite song, "Work for the Night Is Coming" is a hint as to his influence in the city of Austin -Peay University and the hometown of Wilma Rudolph, Olympic champion. The church building was comfortably filled. I've returned for the night lecture (to which I'll move once this update is written) in Loyd Auditorium on the southside of the campus. I noted the various displays in the Bader Gym have largely been picked up; only a couple of book dealers wares remain and the CD recording station, of course. The weather predictors up this way are warning of an overnight snowstorm for south Mississippi reaching up possibly to the Charleston and Batesville region for a couple of inches (hope it is gone by the time I leave Henderson for home about Noon on Friday, Lord willing)..... Feb. 10....Greg Ledbetter's grandfather of Clarksville, TN passed away at age of 98; visitation from 4-7 pm tonight and memorial is Thursday, 1 pm, at Forrest Street United Methodist Church in Clarksville. // Am enjoying the lectures; Winford Claiborne spoke this morning at the 7:30 timeslot regarding many changes which are happening in the thinking of brethren as well as others with regard to 'whether we can know anything'. Of course, Jesus said we could come to know and do (Matthew 7:21). This is not recognized by many in today's religious world. The crowd here has really increased; yesterday afternoon (Tuesday) so many cars were here, I had to park across from the baseball field on the southside of the campus. Took some pictures of the crowd for chapel for you to see. God bless; thanks for keeping up with the lectureship via this site this week........ Feb. 9.....The snow was followed by sleet which had more watery content than ice; then snow fell again overnight. My walking across campus (about 500 yards each trip)was atop 1/2 inch of slush last evening. The 3,000 or so are here enjoying the fine lectures: Overview of First Corinthians was well presented by David Powell yesterday mroning and later in the early afternoon a missionary, brother Flynn, presented an outstanding appeal to all to be renewed in our talking, teaching and serving others. Open Forum led by Ralph Gilmore dealt a lot with First Corinthians and a discussion of 'patterns' of conduct. Several young men and older men spoke from the floor, too. ......hope to update more during the afternoon today....couldn't get out by internet for awhile yesterday afternoon....maybe the result of the rains..... Arrived at Henderson, TN for the Bible Lectureship about 8:30 pm Sunday night; met Dale and Bryan (of Oregon) right off the bat next door to our staying quarters in Paul Grey Hall. Staying with Lonnie Woodruff of Benton , Ky, but Oregon is still a stretch for even him! Feb. 8.....Snow is coming down in Henderson; schools in the area are dismissed today and the prediction is 3-4 inches of the white stuff; came down like big feathers about 7 a.m.; if the Tennessee DOT has its way, the main roads will be cleared quickly, but the lingering effect of 32 degrees predicted for tomorrow means most of the snow on the roadsides will remain......I'm heading to the morning lectures, south at Loyd Auditorium. .....more to come this week; hope you enjoy updates...... rdr -0- Prayer for: Continue to remember Janie Cole’s sister, Judy Williams, in Oxford Baptist room # 529. Elsie Kendall is having some swelling in both legs. Keep her in prayer. Nellie Tutor is in room # 352 in Grenada in the PCU Unit. He once noted, “if you don’t pace your speaking time, you can actually talk yourself to death.” Latter years involved him in World Bible School. We were proud of Stephen Steward’s decision to come forward on Wednesday evening. Teen Puppet Team-in the teen room today at 5:00. Please check in the foyer for the Directory posted on the bulletin board and make changes where necessary. Copies of Mike & Molly’s e-mail is in the foyer. SLCC: Thanks to all those who helped SLCC reach its goal of matching an anonymous $10,000 donation. It was the unanimous decision of the SLCC Board to use these funds to pay off all outstanding camp debt. SLCC is now in a position to consider future capital improvements, such as a retreat center. Our congregation has, for many years, benefited greatly from this ministry. May SLCC continue to honor and praise God, for generations to come.
