Building located on Bailey Avenue, 2 streets east of the Coffeeville School Building. Enjoy any night only through Wednesday. Gospel preaching by a variety of speakers at Courtland church of Christ begins next week (8/8-15/10) with Davy Russell opening the 10:00 am service on Sunday and Michael Bates at the 7:30 pm special night service. The Monday through Thursday night services are at 7:00 each time. The various speakers are: Mon-Tim Burroughs, Tues-Jerry Martin, Wed-Billy Bland and Thurs-Larry Fife; remember each weeknight is at 7:00. We really had a well attended meeting at Crockett church last week with many making known his intention to 'change' a way of life; regular attendance in the 40s was exceeded by almost 15 at each service save two which were 41 and 42 in attendance. I'm so grateful for the interest and encouraging plans to be with me again at the Looxahoma congregation the first week of October, Lord willing. Sister Evelyn Page placed membership with Crockett; she was able to attend each service in the meeting. I enjoyed visiting the Batesville meeting with Barry Grider on Friday night; wonderful biblical material was presented each night (I heard by way of the batesvillechurchofchrist dot com website) while I was gone and, of course, on Friday night as well. His preaching helped the souls who hear by any means--in person or via the net. Great Vacation Bible School at Elliott, Saturday, July 31st with about 50 in attendance. Our own E J and Zane led the way in teaching the adult class and leading the songs. Great and enjoyable. 7.20.....Don't we enjoy the decision to obey the gospel made by our young lady, Kaitlyn Coker, on Sunday morning. It's an encourgement for us all. She's been so active in Sardis Lake Christian Camp and Vacation Bible School this year. Her thoughts of the Lord moved her to make this decision, known to her family, but, yet, unknown as to when she would let the decision be known. She did-Sunday. Clarence Sparks of Walls, MS will fill-in preaching on Sunday, July 25th at the classtime 10:00 and preaching service at 11:00. He's been a Christian farmer and preacher for sixty years. He and Connie have enjoyed over fifty years of marriage. He loves you brethren at Charleston and plans to talk with you all at the luncheon at Noon; the evening service will be brought up to the 1:00 pm time w/ bro. Sparks. Enjoy him. 7.16....In fact, we enjoyed the presence of 32 to close our VBS. The theme of the night: Evangelism as we answer the question , "Will we forever stay on the rescue ship??" We had 10 young people and 22 adults to discuss the theme. Again, thank you all for everything done in the vbs '10. 7/14.....What a fine Saturday; the Hernando young people came and made the day for us; 19 brethen in all were together for the day. Don presented excellent material and we recorded the lesson and the songs for CDs to be made. Be in touch with Brad at 662-563-0523 for your copy soon to be cut. // Vacation Bible School enjoyed 4 children on Monday night and 14 adults for Steve Hentz's lesson; on Tuesday night we increased to 14 children and 20 adults for James Hill's lesson; the classes are ably taught by E J and Sherry and Donna is leading the crafts to reinforce the lesson theme each night; Vickie and Brad along with many sisters of the congregation are providing refreshments at the close of each night. Here's the theme: We've Been Rescued from Castaway Bay this year; We are Grateful, Followed the Bible while exiled and Wednesday's lesson is: We Need To Go Back To Find Others (Evangelism). Hope the crowd continues to build 'for souls' sake'.....Please, keep us all in your prayers......A special thanks to all the Charleston brethren for the help in making this year's VBS wonderful. Thanks for 'singing' the songs with us, too. 7/9/10....Don Reel and Carol and their grand daugther have arrived in Batesville for the Youth Day at Charleston to get underway in the morning, Saturday, July 10th at 10:00. With a grilled lunch and discussion classes and congregational songs section, it's sure to be a grand day which closes by 2:00 pm. Thanks for all the brethren who are helping us in any way to be successful in the 2nd Annual Youth Day. Don will be staying over and speaking for us at the 11 o'clock worship service on Sunday, the 11th. Our class re: prayer will be at 10:00 with rdr and brad teaching and bringing discussion. 6/4/10....The Gospel lectureship at Calvary Hill, Hwy. 6 East of Oxford on the hillside, gets underway with Steve Hent at 7:00 tonight; Tom Holley of Starkville also speaks as well as Cecil May, Jr. scheduled to begin at 8:00. He now lives and teaches in Montgomery ALA; hope s/ Winnie is with him as well. Lectures get underway on Saturday at 9:00 with Joel Ellis of LaGrange, GA and Cecil at 9:40; Robert R Taylor, Jr. at 10:40...he's of Ripley, TN and has written many books which we love 'Christ in the Home' is one; Gary Kerr of Bowling Green, KY closes the morning at 11:20; The afternoon gets underway with Will Anderson at 2:00pm and Joel Ellis at 2:40; Michael Bates at 3:40 and Tom closes at 4:20. Go and enjoy some if not all of the lectures. I am enjoying conversations with Hugh O'Brien (Wyatt Earp); Johnny Western (Gene Autry's singer) and even Clint Walker (Cheyenne and Daniel Boone) and Robert Fuller (Wagon Train); will leave later this morning, but the memories are so good. Last night a panel called 'Mr Gibbs' the sidekick of Wyatt Earp for four years. He was a 'hoot' who really enjoyed telling us of his two show Cadillacs, one being a limited edition of the 1938 model. Many of the closes of the 'Gunfight at the O K Corral were shown last night. It seems no one definitively knows the story of that 20 seconds, 34 short event in October of 1881...... Have a great day....thanks for your service. 6/3/10....Enjoyed a fine crowd of over 100 at the summer series in Alamo, Tn last night; came to Olive Branch overnight to attend a couple of days of viewing the old westerns at the Memphis Film Festival. You can google to go to the Memphis Film Festival and see the various actors who will be here to see and interview....; Hope we are able to stuff envelopes and mail our first announcement of the July 10th Youth Day by this weekend. Thanks for all you do; I printed and folded the flyers on Tuesday afterooon. by the way, what a fun time at the Bingo and Goodies evening at the Nursing Home! Who had more fun....the residents or the church family??; Jim Criss told me via phone that all has gone well with him; I continue to have him on the prayer list and he deeply appreciates it. 5.29.10...Special teaching services are planned for early June this year: Calvary Hill church in Oxford features Steve Hentz and Cecil May, Jr. on Friday evening,7:00, June 4 and lectures about every hour starting Saturday morning, June 5th, at 9:00 with preachers like Robert R Taylor, Jr. (of Ripley, ,TN). The Sunday services are at 10:00 and 11:00 with a luncheon together at Noon, but the night service is at 7:00. Enjoy......and grow in the Lord. 5.27.10...In case some are desirous of a special series of studies re: Worship on Wednesday night at 7 pm at Batesville the Summer Series begins next week (June 2nd) with Chad Ramsey, of the Gloster St. church in Tupelo, visiting in Batesville. Different speakers each Wednesday night will explore the topic of worship this summer. -0- Attendance at Durant on Monday night was very good; about 10 of the tornado victims of the Ebenezer community were in attendance which included a number of young people. They expressed deep gratitude for the variety of help which came from Batesville and Charleston in the aftermath of the storm a few weeks ago. Steven Ray of Yazoo City spoke on Tuesday and Wednesday nights and Greg Ledbetter, our son-in-law, will close the meeting on Thursday at 7:30 pm. -0- Don't forget the visit of Joel Harper and Margaret Ellen Fox this Sunday morning Re: Mexico Mission Trip. He'll speak at the class time 10:00 am and the sermon at 11:00 as well. Potluck lunch will be followed by the early service (1:15 pm) this 5th Sunday at Charleston. 5.25.10....Grand beginning for the gospel meetings; we enjoyed 43 Sunday morning with 60 or so in the afternoon. The sermons were well received; clothing from Batesville was delivered along with the moneys sent as well. The meeting on tonight (Mon.) is at 7:30 re: Relationship of Salvation and the Church of our Lord. Thanks for your prayers. 5/23/10....Headed to Durant to open the gospel meetings with three sermons on Sunday, 10, 11 and 2:30pm and one sermon on Monday night, 7:30 pm (I know the first bulletins said 7:00, but the actual time planned is 7:30 pm). Thanks for your prayers in our behalf; many of the folks from the tornado ridden Ebenezer community will be present for these sermons. So, thanks for your prayers for us. 5/19/10....Word came from the call of my wonderful Christian friend, Bob McComb of Pontotoc of the passing of one of the most wonderful Christian women that I've known, his wife, Marie McComb. Sister Marie had suffered mightily in the past few years of time and Bob was always at her side with caregiving of the 'top drawer' fashion. Sons, Harold and Eddie, are no doubt stunned at the passing of Mom. Only a few times in life do we meet someone who is a princess among us who encouraged and challenged us to greater heights and service. Such was her skillful voice and choice of words. Holding back many times to not say 'too much' to harm another; yet, taking a stand within herself and always asking gospel preachers their biblical advice to be sure of what the Scriptures say. I have lost a Christian princess to whom I said these words a few years ago. She wouldn't let me finish, but that humility was expected. Visitation at Okolona church of Christ, North Gatlin Street is Thursday about Noon (5/20) with memorial service at 2:00 pm and burial at the Okolona cemetery just north of town. Troy McNutt, Robert Kingsley and I will say a few remarks, none of which will do justice to the heart that ceased on Tuesday morning at 10:15 . 5/15/10....Just received word late this afternoon of the notice of sister Arlene's passing around Noon today; we prayed for her full recovery and although this news saddens us, we are thankful for her life and influence for good and since she couldn't get well from the past week's surgery and therapy, we rejoice in the hope which sustained her life always. I tried to call the home but no answer as of 6 pm today; I am sure Jerry and family are shocked as are we and they are in our prayers now for coping with her passing from our earthly scene. But, the real Arlene continues on in God's world. 10:00 am.....5/15/10..... Just received word this Saturday morning of the sudden turn for the worse of our sister Arlene Bradshaw in the Greenwood hospital; let's pray for her and Jerry and family; previously this week, she was in good spirits, smiles abundant, good skin color and looking forward to a few more days of therapy and she'd be home with her new knee. Let's hope the problem now encountered was quickly found and addressed so she will have the complete recovery she began......//For any others who are saddened by loved ones illnesses, our prayers continue with them, too. ....My prayers are for Zane and E J as they serve Sunday morning. The growth for speaking and teaching a class are ongoing; I spoke to each of them on last Wednesday night, "do what you can in a prepared way, but, also, allow the Lord to work in the hearts of those you address." 5/14/10....We have brought the Tuesday 5 pm Youth Devotionals of the spring to a close with 9 young people and 3 adults present today. With a low overall of 2 youth and a high of 14 youth and with a low of 3 adults and a high of 6, we have averaged 10 each of our Tuesday afternoons! Thank you so much; I'll write some first names (don't have everyone in my memory) soon......... Let's encourage the young people who are 7 or 8 years of age and older to 'register for Sardis Lake Christian Camp' soon. Our 4th Session this year is June 27 through July 3 and already has over 30 signed up (and we are in mid-May!) Let's get registered really soon, please. The $20 dollar deposit will assure a bunk and the congregation will provide scholarships for any. Let's get registered. meetings. Enjoyed Jeremiah and Amanda and Elijah on Sunday night; good information about the work in the South Pacific, American Samoa. // Unity meeting at Batesville Civic Center is ongoing. Wonderful gathering last night as well as sermon by Paul Sain; mtg tonight at 7 p.m. w/ Greg Dismuke. Thanks for you greeting work...... Theme: God's View of Me with RDR, leading the devotional thoughts. 16th...E J Bratcher teaches class w/ Brad at 10:00 am; Zane Surrette, sermon at 11:00; Congregational Singing at 5:00 pm RDR is back / Potluck after services (RDR starts gospel meeting at Sardis at 9:30 am class and 10:30 am sermon) 23rd...(RDR starts gospel meeting at Durant at 9:30 and 10:30 am and (returns to Charleston 5:00 pm stervice)/a backup speaker will be in place just in case traffic and delays cause me to be late for the night service/ and extends meeting to the 24th (Monday) evening at 7:30 pm at Durant. (Guest teacher/speaker: John Hester, class & sermon) and Mike Briscoe at p.m. (Mike is just beginning to speak organized information and he may speak 2 minutes, 5, 10 or 15 minutes....it's his choice; I know you will encourage him no matter what he does and I know he wants to serve the Lord, too. I'm thankful for Mike and I believe you will appreciate him as well. ) 30th...Joel Harper and Margaret Ellen Fox will visit to give report re: Mexico trip back in the spring (Class); Joel will speak sermon at 11:00 am; Potluck lunch and early afternoon service at 1:15 pm (rdr, speaking)...... Thanks to Brad and Vicky for representing us well at Ford's Well church last Sunday morning with his class teaching, leading of songs and giving them an evangelism report of the work going on. Thanks, again. Word has come from the Beardain family of the upgrading of the condition of Vickie Beardain, wife of Roger and daughter in law of Dan and Linnie Beardain of Winona. It appears that tests reveal that medications may help in a wonderful way. Please, continue to have the family in your prayers as they work through the treatments needed. Enjoyed a grand Youth Devo today (27th) with a couple of young people plus the adult helpers (six of us all together). The place of Prayer was emphasized in God's plan and we enjoyed another new song "The Longer I Serve Him, the Sweeter He Grows" being added to the new set of songs. We sang them all today. We'll soon have a prayer listing for this page. Thanks for visiting with us. -0- We knew the day would come, but we sorrow at the passing of Johnny Sanders anyway. His passing came amidst a whirlwind of effort to bring him back one more time, even flying him to Oxford, before he crossed over. "He has a new porch" this evening (4/19)". I don't know that I've ever known a man who enjoyed more the rocking chair on a front porch...meeting and greeting others as they drove past. Johnny was a working, Christian man as well. He knew how to help folks quickly and efficiently. He also kept growing to improve in every spiritual way with the Lord. He often asked for prayers as he grew. We'll miss him, but never pass a 'porch' but that we'll think of him. Memorial is planned for Wednesday afternoon with visitation to bgin at 2 and the eulogy service at 3 pm at Womble Funeral Home in Charleston. Thanks for Andrew Crowe of Jackson's Grove church who in my absence led the Youth Devo last Tuesday (13th). The theme of the devo "How God Influences Us" was presented well. Our next Youth Devo will be held, Tuesday, 5 pm on April 27th. Invite others to join with us then, please. Prayers: Gayle Lester McDonough, of Jonesboro, AR is in serious health condition. Garvis Semore now of Freed-Hardeman as well as Bruce Pate, former preacher at Central Academy back in the '70s, now at the Antioch church in Nashville, TN and Larry Harper of Alamo, TN were guest preachers. Each of the sermons was very informative. -0- Mike Clark of Batesville has improved. Our Gospel Meeting with Garvis Semore begins Sunday at 10, 11 and 1 with a lunch on the grounds at Noon. Dave Huffman presented much information of the children's home in Panama while at services with us last Sunday (21st) afternoon. When $9,000 will have an adult as well as 10 children served food and education for a year, we need to help such an inexpensive way of work. So many of you did just that. Visitation will be tonight (17th) at Newson Funeral Home in Charleston. Funeral Services at Newsom will be at 2 pm on Thursday. Burial at Sumner, MS. UPDATE OF RDR WHILE ATTENDING FREED-HARDEMAN UNIV. ANNUAL BIBLE LECTURESHIP........ Feb. 12....Yes, early at the update today! Was loaded for trip back to MS by 5:30 am today; but, till the discussions which begin at 8 am this morning, I will be on campus. Ordered 35 CDs of the speakers during the week; will pickup before leaving at noon. I've heard of 7 or 8 inches of snow down in the Jackson, MS area and some smaller amounts 1-2 inches coming into north MS this morning;hope it clears off the road before I sky on it!....The emphasis on biblical preaching last night in the lecture was duly needed (I Cor. 14) however, the idea of more 50 minute sermons brought many discussions, especially from some younger preacher students. I discussed with several of them before leaving the auditorium. The passage is not dealing with the amount of time; rather the quality of the preaching. They were concerned about jumping to 45-50 minutes from their usual 15-20 format. If the biblical emphasis is quality of content, understandability, then, the length of sermon doesn't matter as much. ....Back to yesterday and something which struck me on the trip out Hwy. 100 east of Henderson---it's all built up now. Where only a few years ago, there were a few stores; now, houses are everywhere and timber has given way to well-kept pasteur lands. What a surprise!......Well, headed to Loyd Aud for Phil Sanders lesson......hope you have enjoyed the updates from FHU this year........s/rdr Feb. 11....You know something is going on due to the delay (till 7 pm) of an update today; I took occasion to travel to Clarksville, TN for the memorial service of Greg's grandfather, Robert Francis Ledbetter, 98. A tribute was given to a man who has left a legacy for his family and all friends. His favorite song, "Work for the Night Is Coming" is a hint as to his influence in the city of Austin -Peay University and the hometown of Wilma Rudolph, Olympic champion. The church building was comfortably filled. I've returned for the night lecture (to which I'll move once this update is written) in Loyd Auditorium on the southside of the campus. I noted the various displays in the Bader Gym have largely been picked up; only a couple of book dealers wares remain and the CD recording station, of course. The weather predictors up this way are warning of an overnight snowstorm for south Mississippi reaching up possibly to the Charleston and Batesville region for a couple of inches (hope it is gone by the time I leave Henderson for home about Noon on Friday, Lord willing)..... Feb. 10....Greg Ledbetter's grandfather of Clarksville, TN passed away at age of 98; visitation from 4-7 pm tonight and memorial is Thursday, 1 pm, at Forrest Street United Methodist Church in Clarksville. // Am enjoying the lectures; Winford Claiborne spoke this morning at the 7:30 timeslot regarding many changes which are happening in the thinking of brethren as well as others with regard to 'whether we can know anything'. Of course, Jesus said we could come to know and do (Matthew 7:21). This is not recognized by many in today's religious world. The crowd here has really increased; yesterday afternoon (Tuesday) so many cars were here, I had to park across from the baseball field on the southside of the campus. Took some pictures of the crowd for chapel for you to see. God bless; thanks for keeping up with the lectureship via this site this week........ Feb. 9.....The snow was followed by sleet which had more watery content than ice; then snow fell again overnight. My walking across campus (about 500 yards each trip)was atop 1/2 inch of slush last evening. The 3,000 or so are here enjoying the fine lectures: Overview of First Corinthians was well presented by David Powell yesterday mroning and later in the early afternoon a missionary, brother Flynn, presented an outstanding appeal to all to be renewed in our talking, teaching and serving others. Open Forum led by Ralph Gilmore dealt a lot with First Corinthians and a discussion of 'patterns' of conduct. Several young men and older men spoke from the floor, too. ......hope to update more during the afternoon today....couldn't get out by internet for awhile yesterday afternoon....maybe the result of the rains..... Arrived at Henderson, TN for the Bible Lectureship about 8:30 pm Sunday night; met Dale and Bryan (of Oregon) right off the bat next door to our staying quarters in Paul Grey Hall. Staying with Lonnie Woodruff of Benton , Ky, but Oregon is still a stretch for even him! Mark Upton, Liscensed Marriage and Family Therapist, and his wife, Miriam, are planning to do mission work for the Lord's cause in His church in Panama of Central America. Their plans are interrupted monetarily somewhat by some promises not being fulfilled from some congregations here in the States. If each of us were to send a donation for this work, they would feel so much better about their departure on January 22nd. Here's some more information; He will visit us here if he can before their departure. Stacy Carter, retired Gospel preacher in Mississippi, is Miriam's father, now living in Louisville, MS. in the area of the other daughter, Rachel. More information: We have letters of reference if needed. Dear Friends, Through our short-term mission work (2 trips to Madagascar and 2 trips to Panama), and with much prayer and meditation we have become convicted that the instruction to “go into all the world” applies directly to us. Having seen firsthand the tremendous need for Christ around the world we feel the sense of urgency communicated through the scriptures. We feel the burden of the blessings of living in a modern, wealthy country and believe that “to whom much has been given, much is expected.” We are overwhelmed by the number of people who live in profound poverty without the most basic necessities and more importantly living without knowledge of our Lord. As a result we have made the commitment to move to Panama City, Panama. We will form a mission team with David and Lisa Carter, Miriam’s brother and sister-in-law, who are already working in Panama. David and Lisa moved there approximately two years ago to work as vocational missionaries on one of the islands near Panama City. In April of 2008, they moved into the city and began full-time mission work in cooperation with Raul and Betty Alvarado, the Panamanian missionaries there. We spent several weeks in Panama this last summer and will move to Panama City in January 2009. Our commitment is for no less than 3 years but can easily become a mission effort that lasts many years. Having our youngest child now in college allows us to commit for as long as God can use us. The areas of need in Panama City: English speaking congregation. Panama City is a city of approximately 1.6 million people. In recent years, Americans have returned as investors and retirees, this community needs a place to worship. Leadership Training / Family and Relationship Counseling. The local preachers asked us to help them in these areas. Like in the U.S., families are struggling with brokenness. university in Panama has requested that the Let’s Start Talking Program (LST) provide a full-time English reading program there. This ensures that students are increasing their English language skills by reading the scriptures with Christians and it ensures a steady stream of short-term mission workers into the country. As a result there will be an increased need for full-time workers to provide follow up study to those touched by LST short-term efforts The surrounding area is crowded with indigenous tribes or refugees from Columbia living in poverty, trying to survive in the jungles of Panama. Much effort is needed to aid these people. Many have been baptized in recent months. Meeting places need to be built, medical care is needed by all, and these sheep need to be fed. Therefore, our initial effort will be to live among the people of Panama City, speak their language, form relationships with them, and show them Christ. We will work directly with David and Lisa and in cooperation with Raul and Betty to teach and bring lost souls to Christ. Though our initial efforts will be in the city, we are also aware of the great need in the more remote rainforest areas of the country and will explore efforts to reach people in those areas as well. So many people have been instrumental in helping us come to this decision. Many people have prayed, offered advice, listened to our thoughts, and provided financial support. We thank you and beg for your continued prayers on our behalf and on the behalf of the people of Panama. He's an excellent Gospel preacher and missionary who fell 14 ft. from a deer stand whose steps broke as he was coming back down from a hunting site. Although initially getting up, dusting off and calling his wife, he became very sick later on his way home (in the Dothan, Ala. area). An ambulance was called to take him to a Birmingham hospital where surgery was necessary to remove his spleen and reset the pancreas and possibly other internal organs. He's in serious condition.
